Here's why Motel 6 stinks. In May of 1997 I sent this letter to their corporate address:

Motel 6
14651 Dallas Parkway
Suite 500 Dallas, TX 75240
Phone: (214) 702-6958 FAX: (214) 702-5947

On 5-18-97 at 11:45am we arrived at Motel 6 at 1501 Martin Luther King Jr, Monroe, La. to find that the reservations that my wife's sister made for us and her other sister were only partially filled. My wife's sister was graduating from NLU and reserved two rooms at this motel for us and her other sister. The other sister's room was reserved, but there was no mention of us. Consequently, we did not get the adjoining rooms we were promised. We settled for a room above them. We then found for $36 we got a room approximately 10 feet square with a small bathroom attached and a 20 year old tube-type TV. For the same price here in Baton Rouge, La. we'd have gotten a very nice room with a modern TV, cable, coffee pot, FULL SIZE BED, etc.

The air conditioning in this room was barely adequate to keep the room temperature in the low 80s and while watching the 20 year old TV, it started emitting this loud crackling/sparking noise from the rear, so loud you could hardly hear the audio.

The double bed in this nasty little room was too small for my wife and me to share with our 3 year old daughter, so I went to the lobby and asked the clerk for an extra pillow and another blanket for her. She told me maybe I could get the blanket, but don't count on the pillow. I managed to get the pillow by speaking directly to one of the housekeepers at another room.

I noticed some old geezer walking around in a security uniform and thought at least they were making an effort there, but when we were kept up at all hours of the night by fools with booming car stereos and yelling from the balcony, I knew that was a farce. I distinctly remember looking out the window at 2:45am and seeing him and the woman in the next room discussing some problem at the top of their lungs.

Also that night after getting in about 9:45pm, we went to see if the tiny little pool was open and found that it was closed after 9:30. Acceptable. Only the next morning when I took my little excited 3 year old girl to the pool for an early splash at 7:30am, we found a PADLOCK on the gate. Guess who didn't splash?

How can your corporate conscience let you charge those exorbitant prices for such deplorable accomodations? You might as well leave the light off for me.

Then I wrote them this letter with a copy of the first on January 10, 1998:

Paulette Garcia
Guest Relations Asst. Mgr.
Motel 6 Operating L.P.
14651 Dallas Pkwy #500
Dallas, TX 75240
Ms. Garcia,
In May of 1997, and a time or two since then, I faxed the attached letter to your office (suite 500) and to this date have received no response from anyone. I have heard others say that they have been equally unsuccessful in getting satisfaction from this company.
I have also heard from another that they did have success dealing with you, so this letter is now addressed to you.

Here is a copy of the blowoff form letter the Guest Relations Manager sent back to me: reply1

And here is my January 17, 1998 reply to that lame letter:

Stacy Shearhouse
Guest Relations Manager
Motel 6 Operating L.P.
14651 Dallas Pkwy #500
Dallas, TX 75240
Ms. Shearhouse,
On January 10 off 1998, I wrote the attached letter and on the 17th of January received this form letter apology.
I do not care if you appreciate my comments (read complaints) and I do not care if my experience concerns you deeply. I have no interest in your apologies, nor do I care that my incident will be addressed with the staff. I don't care how much retraining you say will occur, or if serious corrective measures are taken.
I want my money back. That is all. I spent $36 and for that was given a dump to stay in. Had I known your company had such low regard for their customers, I would have just disputed the charge with my credit card company and been done with this from the beginning.

And here are the results of my trying to get satisfaction from a bunch of jerks:

And here, for your viewing pleasure, is the best you can ever hope for after staying in one of Motel6's ghetto rooms:

Payday!

IF YOU HAVE A MOTEL6 HORROR STORY, SEND IT TO ME AND I'LL PUBLISH IT HERE!
Hey Motel 6, I'm leavin' the counter on for ya!!
