Hi. I have a Motel 6 story that I would like to share. It involves the Motel 6 located in Newport, Rhode Island. I should file a criminal complaint, because their actions amount to theft. Here's the story.

On June 17, 2002, I left a watch in my room at the Motel 6, located in Newport, Rhode Island. I was visiting Newport for a wedding. About 40 minutes after leaving the motel, I contacted the front desk of the Motel 6 and said I left my watch there. Later, the front desk employee called me on my cellphone to tell me it was found and she would mail it to me in Pittsburgh.

Several weeks passed, but I never received my watch. Thus, I called the motel (401-848-0600) and spoke to the manager on duty. She denied a watch ever being found or mailed to me. I explained that the front desk employee told me that the cleaning person found it and that the front desk employee asked for my mailing address to mail the watch to me. The manager denied that. She also said that nothing gets mailed out without her supervision. I asked her to look into the situation and ask the employee working that morning. She refused to do so. She also said that she could not provide me any information about that room because it was not registered under my name. When I told her the name of the person who registered the room she denied that any such guest existed. She was extremely rude, hostile and did not want to investigate the situation. When I mentioned I was an attorney, she stated that if the registered guest sent a signed letter giving her permission to reveal information about the room, she would call me back.

That same day, my friend (the registered guest) sent such a letter. The manager never called me back. I have made repeated phone calls, but the manager is always "unavailable." As you may know, this is considered theft. To this date, I have not received my watch. I actually phoned the motel today, September 25, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. and was again told the manager was unavailable. The person working at the front desk was rude and did not want to listen to my story. She hung up on me before I could give her my
telephone number.

The fax sent by my friend is reprinted below. Even after spending all of this time and money in an attempt to retrieve my watch, I have not received it. I am contemplating a suit is small claims court to recover the watch and/or the $150 that I paid for the watch. However, living in Pennsylvania, filing a suit in Rhode Island would not be worth the cost of the watch. In any event, the fax sent to the Motel 6 Manager of the Newport, Rhode Island location is below. Needless to say, I will NEVER stay at a Motel 6 again!!

Thanks for listening.

REPRINTED FAX SENT TO MANAGER OF MOTEL 6, Newport, RI, authored by registered motel guest:
I stayed at your Motel 6 on June 14-17, 2002. I arrived on the evening of June 14 and checked-out around 7:00 a.m. on June 17. A friend, Tricia Davis, was in my motel room on June 16 and 17, 2002. She left a silver Kenneth Cole watch in my room. On the morning of June 17, 2002, Tricia phoned the Motel 6 and asked the woman at the front desk if they found the watch. The front desk person said she would have the cleaning person look and call Tricia back on her cellphone. In the meantime, I also called the front desk and asked about her watch. The front desk person told me that she had already spoken to Tricia about the watch. Later that day, the front desk person called Tricia on her cellphone and told her the cleaning woman found the watch - it was on the floor next to the nightstand. The front desk employee said if Tricia provided her address, she woud mail the watch to her. Tricia gave her address as requested, but never received the watch.

You have my permission to reveal any private information about my motel room and its contents to Tricia Davis. Please send the watch found in my room to its legal owner - Tricia Davis.

By the way, I am very disappointed with the way that Motel 6 has handled this situation. I should not have had to spend time writing this letter when I already told the front desk person that my friend left her watch in my room. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation.

Sincerely,
