Kel-Tec Stinks
Quality Control is Non-Existent

I have had a Kel-Tec P11 (9mm) for a long time now and Friday, April 4, 2003, I received a new Sub2000 that I had waited about a week to receive through my local dealer. First thing I noticed was that the 10 round Mecgar magazine that came with it would not stay in the gun. You could easily pull it out after slapping it in, without depressing the magazine release button. I sent it back with the following letter.

I have a P11 (SN56708) and a Sub2000 (9mms&wSN14051). I also have the following magazines: The magazine that came with the Sub2000 will not lock in place. It will not lock into my P11 either. The only reason it stays in the grip is that it is too big (it doesn’t fall out like it is supposed to). The 30 round magazines (2) I bought do not lock in either. The only magazine that I have found that will work in either gun (other than the p11 mag in it’s gun) is the 15 round from my S&W5906. It works perfectly.

Every magazine I own works perfectly in my S&W5906, including the Mecgar you sent. This tells me that the magazines are all perfect, something is wrong with the gun. Since it was built on the same receiver as the P11, this tells me the P11 I own is defective as well. Part of the problem I notice in the Sub2000 is that the molded handgrip is not sealed closed and it opens easily.

I am returning the guns for repair. I am including one 10 round P11 Mecgar, one 30 round magazine of unknown origin, one 15 round S&W magazine, and one Mecgar 10 round Sub2000 magazine, a P11, and a Sub2000. I expect upon return of these guns and all magazines to me that all 4 magazines will lock up tightly with a minimum amount of force needed.

I also require reimbursement for the attached postal receipt for returning this gun to you. Thank you.

They received it the following Tuesday (April 15)(USPS only ships guns to the manufacturer and only via ground). When I called to check how long it would be, the lady in repairs (Sharon) said up to two weeks. She stated she logs them and puts them on a shelf and no one has any idea what the gun is there for until Marty the gun fixer opens the box. Any of the guns ahead of mine could be there for upgrades. I told her this is a ridiculous way to prioritize work. Customers who receive broken guns should not have to be in line behind people who want frivolous things done to their guns. She then gave me to Marty. Marty is a nice guy who fixes guns. He has no say in their prioritization. Putting Marty on the phone does nothing but delay the repair of my gun even further.

So since I got no sympathy from anyone there who can do anything about it, I figure I will at least save some shipping and have an accessory order included in my return package. I called back on the following Tuesday (April 22) and asked for a $10 sling and a $25 spare mag holder. Sharon again. She tells me they don't have any spare mag holders right now. I ask if that means I will have to pay shipping on that item later. She says yes...

I call back on the sales number and ask who's running things there, as I usually do at this point. She says Rick, but he's only over gunsmithing, not Kel-Tec. She looks me up and finds that my return is listed in the computer and itemized description has been logged. But it says I asked for shipping reimbursement but didn't include a receipt. Wrong. Receipt was attached, which she found when she personally went and looked. Whew, almost got screw on that $13!

Then when I tell her I shouldn't be getting penalized by an extra shipping charge because they don't have their own products on hand, she tells me that I do get a law enforcement discount. What's that got to do with me having to pay an extra $4.95 in shipping because they can't keep stock? Her response is that they are a small comany and they are trying. So I couldn't get them to offer me anything in the way of compensation for getting jerked around by their shoddy manufacturing and repair practices and I almost lost out on my $13 return shipping reimbursement in the process.
