I decided to use a router for this part, so I went out and bought one, Ryobi $59 HomeDepot, 24 bit set, $70 Harbor Freight.

I used the 1/4" straight bit set to a depth just shy of the last ply on the bottom.
This hole is 12" X 2" and I tested some hot lead in a similar hole before attempting this on my centerboard.

This is a shot of the lead cooling in it's hole, slightly higher than the surrounding wood.
I forgot to add some horizontal nails inside the hole for grippage I think it's in there good though.

I used this rasp to file the lead down flush with the wood. That's a chore, but the belt sander was hardly scratching it. I have read that others have used a 3" hole with about 2 pounds of lead. This hardly sounds like enough. My lead weighs about 15 pounds.
